The Grantees’ Association, which was born in 1996, now has almost a thousand members, all of whom have benefited from the Barrié Foundation’s grants for research, undergraduate study or postgraduate study in Spain or abroad. The Association, which is a member of the Ryder Club Spain, carries out a series of activities designed to enable its members to come into contact with professional and academic institutions at regional, national and international level, as well as to foster and nurture their ongoing links with the Foundation itself. It can thus be seen as a talent-sharing network that channels the activities of those grantees who would like to put their knowledge and experience at the service of Galicia, and more particularly of the Foundation, so that the expertise they have acquired as a result of their education and research projects can be reinvested in the progress of Galicia and its inhabitants.
Education has been one of the Foundation’s cornerstones since its inception in 1996, with an ongoing commitment to talent and excellence dedicated to training the professionals of the future that Galicia needs, a commitment revealed by the more than 14,600 grants awarded to date. Governing bodies The Association is governed by two separate bodies: the General Assembly and the Executive Board. The General Assembly is the supreme governing body and is made up of the total number of the Association’s members. Ordinary general meetings are held once a year, usually coinciding with the annual Christmas symposium, whilst extraordinary general meetings are convened as and when circumstances require, or when requested in writing by a minimum of 20 members.
The Executive Board is the body responsible for managing and representing the Association, and its members, elected during the Ordinary General Meeting, are as follows:
• President
• Secretary
• A maximum of 9 ordinary members
• A representative of the Foundation
Carlos Lema Devesa was the first president, a position he held from 1997 to 2000; he was followed by José María Castellano (2001-2004), since when the position has been held by Fernando González Laxe. The Association publishes an annual journal, 43ºN 8ºW, which was launched in 1997, and a full directory including all the Foundation’s grantees.
