Significant Events

2000-2011

2011

  • The Foundation announces the launch of educaBarrié, its contribution to the educational community: a place to meet and exchange views that contains all the educational content provided by the Foundation:www.fundacionbarrie.org.
  • The Scholars Association has now been active for 15 years in bringing together the talent of its over 800 members, all former grantees.
  • The Foundation presents its action plan for the Portico of Glory, part of the Cathedral Project, to which it has committed four million euros.
  • The Virtual Portico educational project has received 31,000 visitors at its venues in Santiago, Berlin and Lisbon.
  • The Foundation, in partnership with the PwC Foundation, has created Más Social, a project aimed at strengthening management skills in the third sector.

2010

  • HRH The Prince and Princess of Asturias and HRH The Infanta Cristina de Borbón visit the Portico of Glory.
  • The Foundation’s Jazz Season celebrates its 15th anniversary with a special programme of concerts and parallel activities.
  • The Foundation wins the Regional Government of Galicia’s Cultural Award for initiatives in favour of Cultural Heritage for its work in cataloguing and restoring heritage assets.

2009

  • The Foundation offers a major educational programme of free guided tours of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral’s Portico of Glory to the general public.
  • Inauguration of the Carmela Arias y Díaz de Rábago Social Reintegration Centre in A Coruña.
  • Carmela Arias y Díaz de Rábago, the Foundation’s president, passes away at her home in A Coruña on 27 October.
  • The University of Santiago de Compostela awards its Patron of Honour medal to the Foundation.

2008

  • The Foundation is made an Honorary Member of the A Coruña branch of the Official Association of Quantity Surveyors.
  • The Galician Confederation of Industry confers its Business Leadership award on Carmela Arias y Díaz de Rábago, the Foundation’s president.
  • The scaffolding is erected and preliminary studies begin for the restoration of the Portico of Glory, within the framework of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral Programme.

2007

  • The Foundation celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special programme of activities.
  • The City of A Coruña bestowed its Gold Medal on the Foundation.
  • The President of the Foundation received the 49th Fernández Latorre award, bestowed annually by the Santiago Rey Fernández-Latorre Foundation

2006

  • The University of Vigo awarded its Gold Medal to the Pedro Barrié de la Maza Foundation on the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the founding of the Pedro Barrié de la Maza School of Industrial Engineering.
  • Signature of the agreement of collaboration between the Pedro Barrié de la Maza Foundation and the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela for the restoration of the vaults and arches of the main chapel, of the Pórtico de la Gloria, and for the reorganisation of the Cathedral Museum.
  • Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Asturias visited the Foundation and the exhibition ‘Impressionism. Masterpieces from the Wallraf-Richartz Museum- Corboud Foundation’.

2005

  • The inauguration of the Pedro Barrié de la Maza Foundation’s premises in Vigo

2004

  • The Spanish Association of Foundations’ Medal of Honour was bestowed on the President of our Foundatio

2003

  • The Countess of Fenosa was appointed Dame of the Order of the Knights of María Pita
  • Carmela Arias y Díaz de Rábago was distinguished with the title of favourite daughter of the city of Corunna

2002

  • Carmela Arias y Díaz de Rábago, Countess of Fenosa, was awarded the Great Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic
  • HRH The Prince Philip was a guest at the opening ceremony of the exhibition ‘Young Picasso

2000

  • Carmela Arias y Díaz de Rábago, Condesa de Fenosa, became the first honorary member of the Galician Academy of Science, in recognition of her work and in gratitude to the Pedro de Barrié de la Maza Foundation, which she presides. A total of 400,951 people benefited from the activities and services provided by the Foundation in the year 2000.

  • The Foundation received the GERIÓN 1999 prize, awarded by El punto de las artes, a magazine dedicated to literature and the arts.
  • Grand opening of the Maestro Mateo's choir.

1998

  • HRH The Prince Philip received the Foundation’s Gold Medal
  • The Fundación is awarded the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes.
  • During 1998 117.397 people were attracted by the cultural services of the Fundación. Approximately half of them participated in activities offered outside the headquarters at A Coruña.

1997

  • The number of users of cultural offer of the Fundación doubled relative to 1996.

1996

  • Total investment in the aims of the Fundación since 1966: 20,000 million pesetas (constant), 45% of which has been devoted to actions, projects and programs related to education
  • During 1996, 46,000 people used the services offered by the Fundación at Headquarters

1995

  • The Headquarters of the Fundación were opened by Her Majesty Queen Sofía of Spain
  • Agreement with the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela for the reconstruction of the Maestro Mateo Choir

1994

  • Creation of the Instituto de Estudios Económicos de Galicia Pedro Barrié de la Maza

1993

  • The exhibition Los Sonidos del Pórtico toured Spain and Portugal

1992

  • Presentation of the epic poem Os Eoas by Eduardo Pondal

1991

  • After the completion of the reconstruction of the Instruments of the Pórtico de la Gloria of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the series of concerts with the wood prototypes toured Spain and Portugal

1990

  • Creation of the Instituto de Electrónica Aplicada Pedro Barrié de la Maza (University of Vigo)
  • Start of the Scholarships Program for Postgraduate Studies Abroad
  • Collaboration agreement with the Fundación Calouste Gulbenkian of Lisbon for the approach of Galician and Portuguese cultures
  • The Fundación Pedro Barrié de la Maza is awarded the Premio Juan Lladó by the Instituto de Empresa and the Fundación Ortega y Gasset for its support to culture and research.

  • Death of Gertrudis Barrié de la Maza, who leaves her personal fortune to the Fundación
  • Organization of a symposium of environmental experts in collaboration with UNESCO

  • Start of the Scholarship Program for Doctorate Studies
  • Agreement with the City Council of Vigo for the construction and subsequent donation of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales de Vigo
  • Start of the program for the creation of diocesan archives, with the launching of the Archivo Histórico Diocesano of Santiago de Compostela

  • Agreement with the Spanish State for the construction and donation of the Escuela de Arquitectura Técnica y Superior de A Coruña. Start of the construction works

  • Pedro Barrié de la Maza creates the Fundación which bears his name with an initial net worth of 3.300 million pesetas
